Ideas Summon Other Ideas
This is from Umberto Eco’s Travels in Hyperreality, from the end of the essay “Cogito Interruptus:”
Even when they are merchandised in a jumble, good and bad together, ideas summon other ideas, if only to be refuted.
It made me think about the blogosphere, and it would be a suitable motto for this weblog. (Eco said this in relation to answering whether or not you should read McLuhan, whom he thought was too vague. “Read McLuhan,” he concluded, “but then try to tell your friends what he says. Then you will be forced to choose a sequence, and you will emerge from the hallucination.”)
